Small businesses are building the future, but financial complexity slows them down. Too many tools. Too much guesswork. Not enough clarity.

Function gives founders and finance teams the systems, insights, and expert guidance they need to stay on top of their numbers and scale with confidence. Bookkeeping, tax strategy, CFO-level advice — all in one place, all working together.

We’re a startup in every sense of the word — fast-moving, always adapting, and focused on solving real problems. We test, we iterate, we move quickly because that’s what building something new requires. There’s still a lot to figure out, and that’s what makes it exciting.

If you’re looking for a place where your work makes an impact — where you can take ownership, move fast, and help shape the future of financial management — you’ll fit right in.

About the Role

We’re looking for a Controller to lead our accounting team and ensure our clients’ financial operations run smoothly, accurately, and efficiently. You’ll be the backbone of our financial management processes —overseeing accounting policies, mentoring staff, and handling the real-world small business accounting challenges that arise daily, from accounts payable and receivable to accruals, stock options, audits, and tax filings.

This role is hands-on and requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and a client-focused mindset. You’ll work across multiple client accounts, answering complex financial questions, ensuring compliance with GAAP or IFRS, and guiding our team to deliver high-quality, reliable financial insights. If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and love solving accounting challenges that directly impact business growth, we want to hear from you.

This is a hybrid position—you’ll start in-office for the first few weeks, then transition to 1-2 days in-office per week. We focus on results, not hours at a desk. Work-life balance matters here.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Oversee and manage a growing team of accountants handling daily accounting activities for clients, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
  • Lead the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes.
  • Prepare and review financial statements, reports, and forecasts to ensure compliance with GAAP (or in rare cases, IFRS).
  • Produce and track key financial KPIs for different clients, providing insights to drive decision-making.
  • Ensure accurate and timely reporting of balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
  • Develop and enforce internal controls to maintain financial accuracy and minimize risk.
  • Prepare financial reports for senior management, stakeholders, and auditors.
  • Ensure compliance with tax regulations and oversee tax filings, including corporate, payroll, and sales tax.
  • Coordinate and support financial audits, ensuring a smooth and compliant process.
  • Develop and refine operating procedures, implementing process improvements to increase efficiency over time.
  • Train, mentor, and manage the accounting team, fostering professional growth and high performance.

A Little About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Active CPA license required; Inactive license will be considered.
  • 7+ years of experience in accounting or finance, with at least 4 years in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and regulatory requirements.
  • Experience with accounting software and financial systems (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite, Karbon).
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across teams and with clients.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel (Pivot Tables, Charts, Conditional Formatting), Google Sheets, and other financial tools.
